Virginia Rifle and Pistol Club
Cowboy Action

Cowboy action shooting is a type of multigun match using a combination of handguns, rifles, and shotguns in a variety of "Old West-themed" courses of fire for time and accuracy. Participants must dress in appropriate themes or era costumes, as well as use gear and accessories as mandated by the respective sanctioning group rules.
Cowboy Action matches at the Virginia Rifle and Pistol Club are designed and run according rules established by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) and local matches are held monthly (May-August) with a larger annual match held during the third weekend of August.

See the above SASS link to learn more about the particular rules related to costume and firearms/equipment requirements. In short, participants dress, and use firearms typical of the late nineteenth century, and shoot stages that reflect the feel of that period's architecture and likely scenarios that would have been experienced during that period, all without getting actually gunned down in a gunfight and ending up in a pine box.

Eye protection, including side shields, and hearing protection is required for all participants and observers.
